Here, Charles Newman has outlined a guide to a strong proposal. Image: Charles Newman. This community kitchen was built following a successful proposal for development work. Photo: Charles Newman.

Over the past four years during my work in the developing world, I have received numerous proposals from communities in need. These proposals have ranged from educational needs, to environmental conservation, to general infrastructure projects. But others lacked the clarity needed to convince a potential donor or investor. Moreover, by answering these questions, the community gains an understanding of how much of their own time and expertise will be required to complete such a project. One proposal for development work that I received last year in Nduti, Kenya, was one of these under-cooked documents.

Unfortunately, it was disorganized and left me to guess as to what exactly they wanted. Recently, I returned to Nduti to meet with the community to clarify what, exactly, they were requesting.

They showed me a broken-down well and hand pump that had been provided by Impact East Africa in The pump began to break so often, though, that fixing it was not financially viable.

Clearly, the community needed a new pump.

Rural Development Plan for a model village

They also spoke of a plan to irrigate nearby public land. NGOs had given them seeds for moringa, watermelon, tomatoes, peppers and other fruits when the pump was working.

Once the pump broke however, the crops could not be irrigated and would fail. They then discussed ideas about leasing the irrigated land to nearby families. They had some great ideas — ideas that would really bring the community forward. They just needed to get them onto paper. I handed them an outline of questions that I wanted them to consider.Such a colonial era mentality is inappropriate and outdated.

What they need is a supportive hand up, not a hand out. It is also about the supportive hand, facilitating access to either an idea that makes things work a little better solar lighting for reading or a tool that suits a need in a village solar electricity for refrigeration in a health center or allows them to earn a living producing more crops using a specially designed hand pump.

A very nice blue bag, that we used through our trip to keep our maps and memories together, had a big map with our route and things to see highlighted, a beautiful book with all the places to see, tons of good information, itinerary with addresses and phone numbers for hotels and a telephone, that was very useful, when our car broke down away from the main road.

We were back on the road in less than two hours. Local mechanic was nice and we got to try some hot dogs at the local gas station, which you need to try, hot dogs are the best ever!.
